Do Not Call
Funny JokeNot a joke really, but a useful way of dealing with telemarketers. Being on the Federal Trade Commission's "Do Not Call" List I haven't had occasion to use this in ages, but it used to work just fine.
When the telemarketer starts his or her spiel, simply break in and ask for their credit card number, then explain that you charge $8.95 per minute to listen to telemarketers and their free sixty seconds will run out soon.
They might object "Oh, but this isn't telemarketing, it's a golden opportunity for you to get a free vacation-" or some such nonsense. That's when you tell them "Ah! Why didn't you say so? For that my fee is $15.95 per minute. Credit card number, please?"
P.S.: Not on the Do Not Call list yet? It's easy to sign up and end the annoyance. http://www.donotcall.gov is the URL. Go there now and sign up!
